Colombia in London – Art for Peace

The New Face of Colombia features in the cultural initiatives for Nobel Peace Prize President Santos’s state visit in London.
The full programme can be viewed here
The exhibition includes a rich programme of events and film screenings to help discovering the many faces of Colombia, the old ones and the new ones!
Given the richness of the programme and poignancy of the curatorial approach to Colombian Art the exhibition has been talked about and discussed extensively on international media. Here you can find an article by Sounds and Colours  and Richard McColl’s interview to Sandra Higgins and Omar Castaneda for Colombia Calling.

Congratulations artist Maria Cárdenas, who has been commissioned by Belfast City Hall, at the heart of the original Linenopolis, to make a white Irish Linen Guayabera for President Santos of Colombia, at a special Belfast event as part of the State visit. This will be presented by the Lord Mayor of Belfast who will introduce Maria as the designer and maker.A third generation tailor, Maria uses her preferred medium of Irish linen to make the traditional Guayabera- a white linen shirt worn for important occasions in Colombia and the Caribbean. The renowned writers, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Ernest Hemingway have worn them. The pure white Guayabera represents the idea of peace and renewal, and hope for Colombia, and for Belfast and Ireland, at this time. Maria develops her own designs, and makes her own patterns, before cutting and stitching the garments.  She has used the traditional four pockets, and has made pintuck details through the pockets and down the length of the actual linen, which is woven by Ferguson’s from “Banbridge Town in the County Down”. Maria works from her small studio at home, among the Mourne Mountains, but also does Costume work in Belfast and London-most recently with Game of Thrones in the famous Titanic Paint Hall Studios…
Colombia is always an inspiration, and it has always been an influence. The natural style that people have, always shines through, as well as the warmth of family and friends. The making skills learned at home from an early age, and the sense of style and poise learned by observing fellow Caleñas has been so important. There is a natural style here in Ireland as well, as well as a desire for peace and stability, that everyone has a right to have.

Maria Cárdenas is a third generation tailor, born in Cali, now living among the Mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland, the home of Irish Linen.Maria’s designs are based on well defined shapes, developed over years. Many of the influences go back to her early tailoring days in Cali, where she learned everything from her mother, who had a great skill and a subtle sense of style.
Maria has been invited to show her work in Europe, London and Dublin, as well as New York, Boston and Philadelphia. She was part of the Best of British Fashion Showcase at the UK Ambassador’s in Dublin just before the Queen’s visit in 2011. Maria was invited to the annual Linen Festival in France in 2015, and was part of the Global Irish Design Challenge at Dublin Castle in 2016. She was invited to join the Irish Linen Guild, and to provide an outfit for the Irish Fashion collection at the Ulster Museum in Belfast, during the curatorship of Elizabeth McCrum, who wrote Fabric & Form: Irish Fashion Since 1950.
