JULY POP UP SEASON 2024
By Merlin Nova
SUNDAY 14th JULY
Exhibition from 1pm
Evening Event: 5-9pm (ticketed – £7 / unwaged £5)
‘Barbieland vs Real World’ is the third instalment of SERIES OF EVENTS. This instalment will include an exhibition of work from Nicole Houff and Merlin Nova and in the evening a participatory read through of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s award winning Barbie movie script soundtracked by artist Fran Lobo.
The exhibition will share Nicole Houff’s photos. Houff is a Minneapolis, MN (USA) photographer who lives in a plastic world inhabited by an infamous resident. Houff’s love for the “even less accurate than Barbie” realities that 50’s and 60’s entertainment portrays complements her stoic muse and her sense of humour. Houff’s “She’s Fantastic and Made of Plastic” series has been going strong for 17 years.
Merlin Nova’s Barbie film will be presented in the exhibition. Her film explores the overlap between reality and fiction. In the film, Barbie gets candid about her run-ins with the media, her life lived as a doll and society’s preconceived notions and misconceptions about her experience of being a woman.
In the evening, fans of the Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s award winning Barbie movie are invited to participate in a read through of the film script soundtracked by artist Fran Lobo’s Barbie inspired DJ set. Calling Barbie movie buffs, drama-lovers and role play enthusiasts come and play the iconic characters and multi-role this acclaimed film on stage.
‘Barbieland vs Real World’ is PINK, PARTY, BARBIE, KEN, ROLE PLAY, ACTING, REALNESS.
