London-based Courtney Jinsook Bae is a Korean American artist and creative director. Bae credits her longstanding exposure to the fashion industry’s ever dynamic visual array as a source of constant inspiration to her fine arts practice. Likewise, she approaches her work as a creative director with a refreshingly adventurous spirit that draws from her fine art persona.
As a child, Bae’s first encounters with watercolour were through her father’s expressive Chinese brushstroke paintings. Her early explorations in watercolour quickly expanded to include oil paint. She is best known for her large scale oil works that flirt between abstract figurative and abstract expressionism. But when Bae craves a new playground from time to time, she achieves a more nuanced, organic feel through her works on paper, where she can explore pencil, marker, pastel, gouache, and ink. Across various media, Bae has garnered recognition for her unique method of alluding to a type of misplaced corporeal perspective.
