16th – 27th July 2019
In separate spaces over three floors Marian Bruce will be installing forty pieces, including sculpture, drawing, books, designs for dance and film excerpts.
Bruce has worked in varied fields within the arts for over fifty years: as a performer, teacher, theatre designer and props maker, production and project adviser, gallery director and curator and workshop coordinator.
Much of Marian Bruce’s visual art work has focused on the plight of the oppressed and the complex vulnerability of humanity, acknowledging the courage of damaged and desperate people in crisis.
Since 1991, Bruce has continued a parallel career designing internationally for the theatre and part of the exhibition will be dedicated to a selection of her costume designs. Film excerpts from her contemporary dance collaborations with her husband, choreographer Christopher Bruce will be available to be viewed.
It is fascinating to see how the two areas of Bruce’s creativity have informed and fed the other and, in this exhibition, this is clearly evident, particularly in recent drawings inspired by her time working with Acosta Danza in Cuba during January 2018.
“Passionate , skillful and unafraid, Marian Bruce’s work reaches into the wildest most wounded regions of the heart to retrieve images of astounding power and tenderness.”
Lindsay Clarke.
Marian Bruce lives and works in Frome, Somerset.
