OLYMPUS PHOTOGRAPHY OUTREACH PROGRAMME 2017

MY HOUSE – MY SCHOOL – MY STREET

Harris Academy Bermondsey

21 – 25 March

For the second year Art Bermondsey Project Space and OLYMPUS have selected a local school in the Borough of Southwark for the Photography Outreach Programme, that invites students to turn their eyes away from their own reflected image of the selfie and rediscover the beauty and poetry of their everyday places: My School – My House – My Street.

Every student was given access to an OLYMPUS camera to take several images in the three different contexts mentioned above and then to choose three to submit to Art Bermondsey Project Space. A jury of photographers, critics and curators selected the best shots to have them printed by OLYMPUS for a week-long exhibition at the Project Space.

As always the jury was overwhelmed with the work produced by students. ABPS artistic director Mike von Joel indeed said:

“The quality and serious intent of the photographs produced by the girls at Harris Academy ably demonstrate that we should not be misled by the plethora of camera-phone snappy snaps that pollute the airwaves. Young people do, in fact, have a very sophisticated take on creative expression through the visual arts.”

On the 22nd of March three students will be awarded a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize. Winning students will each receive an OLYMPUS camera and the school will be given a professional OLYMPUS photography kit to continue nurturing the embryonic talent in the school.
