This exhibition shows the work of three female Mexican artists: Sonia from Monterrey in the North, Doris from Oaxaca in the South and Paula, originally from Mexico City and now living in the UK. It shows the complexity, depth and variety of the contemporary Mexican art scene.
This exhibition is supported by the Mexican Embassy in the United Kingdom and Alegria Latin Art.

Sonia Amelia, based in Monterrey, has a contemporary focus, merging classical Mexican colour palettes and techniques with subjects influenced by Europe. As she puts it herself, her obsession is capturing the fascinating moment when roses and other flowers go past perfection and begin to deteriorate – they become vulnerable and decadent objects. She works primarily in oils and loves to create striking “wow factor” large format pieces. |

Doris Arellano, based in Oaxaca, depicts the traditional life in Oaxaca and the Mexican South more broadly, with vibrant colours and flowing lines. As she puts it herself, she was not given great power with words, but was given eyes that can see the magic of colour and hands to paint what her eyes can see. She uses oils both for their colour and their textural depth, creating truly unique pieces. |

Paula Rodriguez, based in London, aims to capture the beauty and magic of Mexico and Latin America while exploring issues of identity. Seeking to portray fragments of the essence of communities and places, Rodriguez is fascinated by the way spaces acquire an identity of their own through the passage of time, and through the meaning given to them by the people who inhabit and animate them. She uses shape, colour, and form to evoke the magic realism of her cultural background and the richness of its native traditions. |
