Peter Samson: Short Films

8 – 19 December 2020
Gallery 3 – Cinema Space

Peter Samson graduated from Manchester College of Art in the early 1960s and went on to post-graduate painting studies at the Royal College. He started making moving image artworks on leaving the RCA – although remaining devoted to the discipline of drawing as a foundation to his work thereafter.  Samson was also an early member of the London film-Makers Co-op during the 1970s, where his early works were regularly screened and he made good use of their technical facilities. The consummate draughtsman’s eye for detail and the ability to synthesise and explain form through the juxtaposition of light and shade is evident in much of Samson’s film works. Like his wife of many years, the painter Janet Samson, Samson remained faithful to the culture of the North and has been active in the region’s fine art film community for over 40 years and a participant in numerous film festivals across the UK and Europe – often with support from the Arts Council.
